After a busy winter of two kids playing basketball, and a hectic spring of all the kids playing soccer…we typically take the entire summer off from sports just to relax a bit, enjoy ourselves and have some fun.
This summer began a new tradition though when our local girls softball team needed one more player to finish out their team and asked if Weslea could fill in a spot for them. I have to admit, I wasn’t too keen on the idea at first. I really enjoy having long summer months that don’t include any type of sports practices or travelling to games.
It only took attending Weslea’s very first game to make a complete turnaround in my thinking though…I quickly realized that I absolutely love watching her and her teammates play at each of their games!
Weslea had not played any form of softball in the past except for one season of T-ball. It was after that season (when I had two little bitty boys that hated attending games and spent their time trying to make their mama go crazy!) that we decided to pull the kids out of summer sports and take a break. Thankfully, Bill and the kids play all types of sports together all summer long so she has always been able to hit and catch fairly well even though she hadn’t played for a team.
The major con of having a child play softball in Ohio this year? The darn, blasted rain. Which equals many, many makeup games. And then makeup-makeup games when your makeup game gets rained out as well. {urgh!}
The major pro of having a child play softball in our neck of the woods this year?
The amazingly yummy ice cream parlor that we discovered right around the corner from the home field where Weslea’s team plays.
Win or lose, that’s where the team heads after their games. It might not be so good for my waistline, but that peanut butter buckeye sundae calls my name every week anyway.
And for that reason alone, I say…play ball!!
