A Wyatt-ism

This is my goofball, funny-boy, soon-to-be clown of his kindergarten class, loving, warm-hearted Wyatt.
And, as much work as an overly-active six year-old can be, he is a joy to our family. He also has struggled with major speech delay and speech articulation problems for as long as we can remember. He has worked hard at his speech though and spent the last three years in a preschool program that specifically worked with him to improve his speech skills before he moves on up to the kindergarten program in our local school system next month. We really and truly are so proud of him for all that he has accomplished.
He does still have some speech issues that we are working on, but really has gotten so much better that it’s difficult to remember what his speech used to be like. Every once in a while we’ll get a quick glance back to those days when he’s trying to communicate something to us…and most of the time, it ends up being pretty humorous. Kind of like today.
Wyatt (coming up to me at the lake today): Mama? Do you like marshon rides?
Me: What did you say?
Wyatt: Do you like marshon rides?
Me: Marshon rides? Can you say it again? Mommy’s ears aren’t working right.
Wyatt (enunciating very clearly): Mar-shon Ri-des.
{Long Pause}
Me: What is marshon ride?
Wyatt: It’s a marshon ride. Like on TV.
Me: (silent because I have absolutely no idea what he’s talking about)
Wyatt: You know…(singing now)…”Marshon ride is on your side!”
Me: (bell dinging in my head…I’ve got it now) Oh! Do I like “Nationwide is on your side?”
Wyatt: Yes!

Why in the world a six year-old kid is thinking about Nationwide commercials while we are at the lake is completely beyond me. Gave me a good chuckle though!

Although his dad (who works for a different insurance company) might not think it’s so funny that his son is so interested in “The Competition.”
