He Did It!

Sunday was an exciting day for us as Bill competed in his first-ever triathlon event. He got a yen to compete in one a couple of months ago and has been training diligently ever since then. Sunday’s event consisted of a 1/4 mile swim, 14 mile bike ride and 3.1 mile cross-country style run.

First event was….swimming! After a week of hot, sunny weather, Sunday was cool and rainy. Thank goodness the water was still warm from the hot week. This lovely picture of Bill shows off his sexy swimming hat. Every participant was required to wear one and each group wore a different color to tell them apart in the water. The race began with the “internationals” starting first. Their race was a lot tougher (1/2 mile swim, 14 mile bike ride and 6.2 mile run.) About 5 minutes later the men’s division started with green hats and then after another five minutes the women’s division began with purple hats…

Bill’s cousin, Joey, and Joey’s wife, Jenny, have been avid runners, bikers and swimmers for years. They called on Saturday night to talk to Bill and then decided to join the race with him. Joey is in the white shirt on the left and Bill is the guy on the far right:

Bill’s face tells you exactly what he thought about the swimming portion of the event ~ it was a lot tougher than he thought it would be:

He then headed right to the bike area to get dressed for that part of the event. He was a little ticked off with how he did with the swim (I guess he thought that he’d do better than he did) and he was having a hard time getting his shirt on with his skin being so wet.

And here is the news channel videographer, videotaping Bill the entire time he was muttering very choice (not-so-Christian) words about how bad his swim went and his stupid shirt that wouldn’t go on……ah well, what can you do?!

And he’s off on the next part of the race ~

Findley State Park was a beautiful place to hold a triathlon. The running part of the race was definitely more cross country than I expected. A lot of narrow paths and gravel areas.

On his way to the finish line! Will and Weslea were very excited to see him arrive and were quite happy to cheer him on! He finished with a time of 1 hour, 39 minutes ~ not bad at all for his first try…

It was a really cool thing to watch him participate in and I’m very proud of how he did. Jon and Jimmy made it even better by showing up to watch him in action. It was inspiring to watch Joey and Jenny as well ~ Joey finished about 20 minutes before Bill. Jenny finished with a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes….you go girl!! It was awesome to see all the middle-aged and even “old” people participating ~ they were really tough competitors.
